Canon S520; awful results with substitution printers

Hi all,

I just installed a Mandrake 10. Unfortunately, although it's a quite recent distribution, there is still no support for my printer (discontinued).
I'm very glad with it, and in Windows, it even prints excellent photos, although it's supposed to be a simple "office" printer. It's even quite cheap to use (single inks, and I have refill kits). I must admit that I had some problems back from summer vacations (although I had already been absent for much longer, last year there was a terrible heat here in the south of France; even in the north, too, and in Germany): I had to do several cleanings, replace all cartridges, etc. in order to get correct printouts without white stripes anew.

Now it works fine with Windows, but in Linux, it's "degeulasse", like we would say in French. Mandrake proposed me a BJC-4100, if I remember well. But there, page size is even reduced to about a quarter. I tried the S-600, and the page size is fine, but there are still horrible white (that is not printed) stripes on the test page.

Any idea, clue or hint for either another substitute that works or even a place where I could find a generic driver that even supports the full printer's resolution? Even with the S600 that I suppose to be "better" than mine, there are only 600 dpi, and mine is capable of at least 1200x2400 or even more...

As I do a lot of DTP and photo (not really digital yet, but I scan my pictures; BTW: has anybody an idea about another Canon product, the FS4000US slide scanner, which is not supported by Mandrake either, only a much older model (OT I must admit), but important for me, too, especially for the GIMP... ;-).

Thanks in advance, and one can also reply directly (and in French or German, even in Catalan or Spanish or Greek) to my mail address.

But I suppose I'm not the only one interested in this issue...

Best,

Christoph
