Filter crash signal 11

I developed a filter based on the texttohp filter example in the CUPS book.  The filter processes both text and PCL formatted files.  The PCL files are passed through in 'raw' mode with a short prolog and epilog.  The filter crashes when printing a PCL file longer than 16384 bytes (4k hex).  Is the 4k limit a configurable option?  If not, any suggestions on how to get around this problem.
