Epson Aculaser C4100 / eplaser not working

Strangely enough all my print jobs get aborted instantly and there is
nothing useful (to my eye) in the log. If I just change the driver to
"Epson AcuLaser C4100 Foomatic/ljet4 (en)" or lj4dith instead of the
eplaser driver, printing works just fine (in black & white, anyway).

I installed the software with USE=ppds emerge cups foomatic (Gentoo). I
have tried socket and ipp protocols. The ljet4 driver works with both,
but eplaser does not with either.
