not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
../obj/../soobj/gp_unix.o: could not read symbols: Bad value
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

This problem can be workarounded in two ways:
1. Use --enable-dynamic
But this breaks compiling without X11 installed, bug 1351
2. append -fPIC to CFLAGS
but this also makes the binaries build with this flag which is no good.

Can we please get a real fix?
