Font rendering looks ugly on the screen when using ESP GS 8.15.1, but
looks much nicer with (K)Ubuntu 5.10 which uses the old ESP GhostScript
7.07.1. Several examples are attached to this Mandriva bug report.

This should not be fixed by reverting to 7.07.1, as 8.x fixed many bugs of
7.x. Perhaps certain elements of 7.x should be taken into the current
GhostScript generation.

How about basing ESP GhostScript on the new GPL GhostScript 8.50?
