CUPS, A4 pdf Files and Letter vs. A4 Printer Tray

Hi,

my HPlJ5N says fill up the letter tray even if the document has A4 paper
size and even if it's default size A4.

The same file converted using pdf2ps printed using gnome's evince viewer
is printed! Unfortunately the pdf seems to be too comples, gs crashs
later on this file ...

Using cmd works too:
$ lp -d HPLJ5N -P 1,2 dissertation-0.0.68.ps

I'm using debian testing and I've installed:

I guess the problem is related to foomatic filters but I haven't the
knowlege to solve/hunt the problem. Any help here?
