Just out of curiosity, why do you use BUILDROOT instead of DESTDIR? What
about possibly adding the line:

BUILDROOT ?= $DESTDIR

where BUILDROOT is set to DESTDIR if it is not already assigned rather than

BUILDROOT = DSTROOT
