printing *.pbm images results in wrong printout with full black background

The other printer was a Canon i560s using the Gutenprint driver with up-to-date CUPS, drivers, ghostscript, etc. on FreeBSD 6.

I reproduced the same result - large white letters on a black background on an HP with hpijs. The Canon printed the same large white letters with a light greyish background (obscured due to poor head alignment).
