Regarding the login information, the user account you get at cups.org is
*not* used for logging onto the administration page on your computer. 
Instead, use your short username (typically your first and last name in
lowercase) and password - the password is the same one you use whenever
you authorize to install software, change system preferences, etc.

This issue is fixed in the current 1.3.9 open source release but has not
yet been released by Apple. The issue is that this particular Brother
printer has a firmware bug that requires a workaround in the USB code that
was accidentally disabled in 10.5.5 (CUPS 1.3.8). I've put up a Universal
binary of the 1.3.9 USB backend at:

    http://ftp.easysw.com/pub/cups/contrib/usb-1.3.9-macosx-universal

To install it, download the file above and run the Terminal application
(Finder->Go->Utilities, double click on Terminal) and type in the
following command:

    sudo cp ~/Downloads/usb-1.3.9-macosx-universal
/usr/libexec/cups/backend/usb

You'll need to enter the password for your local user account, i.e. the
one you use for installing software...
