thanks for the fast reply. It's a default Ubuntu 8.04 system, and PAM
includes only common-auth/account/session, so it looks like

auth    requisite       pam_unix.so nullok_secure
auth    optional        pam_smbpass.so migrate missingok

I don't get the point yet why a shell is required. :-(
