new cups driver development

Hi All,
       I had a task to write new cups driver for a thermal printer with serial port interface(contains firm ware with the printer interface board).

Could you please let me know the steps to follow in gaining knowledge about and writing the driver?

I will be great full if any one explain in details with the links for any document, as well as any books i need to refer.
