I *think* this is an issue in current Snow Leopard that we are working to resolve. Please file a bug at:

    http://bugreport.apple.com

and include all of the logs, etc. you have.  Also, if you have access to a USB protocol analyzer it might be useful to see what is happening on the bus near the end of the job.
