Foomatic is installed.
pnm2ppa: Yast said it was already installed (cups-drivers package), but starting pnm2ppa from the command line failed (command not found).
After installing it from the source (configure, make, make install), I'm able to call it from the command line. BUT cups still can't find it:

Where does cups look for it?
2nd problem:
Shouldn't a command like "date > /dev/lp0" produce something on the printer? At least some activity at the led? I'm unable to send anything to teh printer, but hwinfo (and cups) find it. So can I assume the port is working?
