Just to make it clearer that this is not the result of a botched/mangled
upgrade, this problem is on a clean installation even though I described
it as an upgrade.  All the partitions were reformatted, except /home.  I
still have other systems with the older, working setup that have not been
upgraded yet.  Most are i586 as this one is, but one is x86_64.

It might be noteworthy to add that when I say the non-simplified does not
work and the simplified does, this is true for a number of cycles of
selecting one and then the other.  I didn't just bail on the
non-simplified when I found the simplified worked.
