The pstops filter in cups 1.3.11-r4 appends 0x0A04 to postcript files. This causes the file program (versions 5.05 and 5.07) to fail to recognize the file as postscript; which in turns breaks some Brother printer filters. I'm not sure whether the real error is in pstops or file, so I'm submitting bug reports for both. Thanks!
