The issue is indeed a kernel thing - if the parallel port driver is not
loaded, the device file is not present, or the device file has the wrong
permissions, then you won't see the parallel port show in the list of
ports.

"dmesg" is probably a good place to start - see if the parallel port is
even detected. "lsmod" should show whether the parallel port driver module
is loaded...
