CUPS quit working

All of a sudden, possibly due to a dist-upgrade but maybe not, I can't
get anything to print. When I look at the cups setup via localhost:631, I
see this:

Description:
Location:
Printer State: stopped, accepting jobs.
"Unable to send print file to printer: No such device"
Device URI: usb://EPSON/Stylus%20Photo%20785EPX

The Epson printer, however, is indeed installed and connected. When I
use mtink to check the status of the ink cartridge, the computer is
definitely talking to the printer, because I get readings in mtink,
whether or not they're correct.

When I print from openoffice or elsewhere, I don't get an error
message--I simply get the print-screen message which flies by so fast
you can barely see it.

When I check "manage jobs," I see all the jobs that wouldn't print listed
as "pending."

I am running Libranet 2.8.1, which is a version of Debian.

Any ideas about what went wrong or how to trouble-shoot it and/or fix
it?
