cupsd: Child exited with status 98!

Hi

Trying to log on to admin at 'cups at http://127.0.0.1:631 but it won't accept my root password.

When I run 'cupsd' I get 'cupsd: Child exited with status 98!'.  I had previously been able to but having reinstalled cups and gimp-print I get this message.  I have searched the cups database but am not able to find  the problem.

I use SuSE 9.1, cups 1.1.20-103, gimp-print 4.2.7.  I am able to configure the printer epson 740 in yast.
