printing to raw hp

Hi,

I'm having a few problems printing to a HP2300 set up as a raw printer in cups. First, any options passed to lpr seem to be ignored. Second, the printer apparently doesn't receive an EOF and sits there waiting for data.
The page only gets printed if a second job is submitted (I assume because this forces an EOF).

This is cups version 1.1.20

ex :
 lpr -o Lower,media=A4 -PHP2300 filename
causes the printer to wait endlessly for data. When the page does get printed (after a second job has been submitted), the page comes out of the upper tray, so the 'Lower' option is not being respected. The printer also asks for A4 paper in the upper tray, which it does have.
Note that the same physical printer configured with the HP driver does print the page immediately, but still does not respect options given on the command line.

Any ideas?
