First let me say how much I really appreciate all your help and suggestions...

I've added setting (and exporting) GS_FONTPATH and GS_LIB
to /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups and restarted it - but unfortunately the problem
persists.

If it at all helps, I just tried linking (and this is just a guess so if it's
foolish I apologize) the verdana.ttf
to /usr/share/ghostscript/Resource/Fonts/Verdana-Uni-00 and that didn't help
either... But loading the font by hand into gs does in fact work, i.e.

     gs -sDEVICE=pswrite -sOutputFile=test.ps prfont.ps
     GS>/Verdana DoFont
     Loading Verdana font from /usr/local/share/fonts/TrueType/verdana.ttf...

                                      * * *
     GS>/Verdana-Uni-00
     Loading Verdana-Uni-00 font
          from /usr/share/ghostscript/Resource/Font/Verdana-Uni-00... 3125560
         1584961 2153676 778358 0 done.
     Using Verdana font for Verdana-Uni-00.

Viewing test.ps in gv looks fine.

I've now completely exhausted my knowledge of ghostscript.

Mark
