Does CUPS ever work out of the box?

too much laments und too few information, what your real problem is ( "cups
doesn't work" ist not information at all ).

Longer time ago I started having some problems with cups, which all resulted 
being my fault. Meanwhile I have installed several linux versions, most of
them compiled "from the scratch", and I can asure you, cups is working like
a clock. Including printing for machines running windows in a network. The
only condition so far was that I had to compile and install cups following
exactly the instructions given.

Try telling us in detail what your problem is, try "googling" the issue
( there are plenty of contributions on this topic ) and I am sure, someone
of us will be able to help you.
