This printer does not need the "usb" backend of CUPS, and so you can 
surround the bug easily. Either use the HPOJ of your distro, or better, 
use the new HPLIP from

http://hpinkjet.sf.net/

They bring their own CUPS backends. And in addition you will then be 
able to scan with SANE and with HPLIP you can also do printer 
maintenance tasks (as nozzle cleaning, head alignment, ...).
