Hi,

We use a similar thing with 3 boxes connecting to about 30 jet-direct printers.  I set up a CUPS server running on each box and let the jet-direct interfaces handle the job control for each printer.

Duplex works using the lp command line options '-o sides=two-sided-long-edge' etc. as long as you are using a driver with that capability.  A postscript driver works for us whereas the omni driver doesn't.
