[cups.general] on what to set GS_FONTPATH or how do i get rid of

ok, i am still trying to get the cvs version of gs working....

i tryed all paths that came to my mind like:
/var/lib/defoma/gs.d/dirs/fonts/
/usr/local/share/ghostscript/7.07/lib/
/usr/share/gs-afpl/8.14/lib/
/usr/share/gs-esp/7.07/lib/
/usr/share/gs-gpl/8.01/lib/

still i get the dreaded
 GS_FONTPATH=$GS_FONTPATH:/var/lib/defoma/gs.d/dirs/fonts/ pdf2ps
 test.pdf
 Error: /invalidfont in findfont

what can i do get get rid of this?
system is debian unstable with all sorts of gs installed, also a lot of
font packages...
