Thanks Till,

I tried to install the hplip source (v 0.84), and got the error

---------------
/bin/sh: line 1: /chkconfig: No such file or directory
make: *** [install] Error 127
---------------

I am using gentoo, and there doesn't seem to be an ebuild for hplip.
version 0.82 terminated with the same error.

I'm guessing that I'm probably missing some dependancies. The question
is, which one(s) :-/
