Thanks - that got me a little bit further.
I'm not there yet though :-(

After compilation and install, I tried to run /etc/init.d/hplip restart
and got the error
---------------------
Stopping hpiod: /etc/init.d/hplip: line 35: =: command not found
/etc/init.d/hplip: line 37: $pidfile: ambiguous redirect
kill: usage: kill [-s sigspec | -n signum | -sigspec] [pid | job]... or
kill -l[sigspec]
rm: too few arguments
Try `rm --help' for more information.

Starting hpssd: [FAILED]

If I run /etc/init.d/hplip start, I get just the last two hpiod and
hpssd failed error lines.

I also tried installing the gentoo hppoj ebuild. I can print to the
device with the generic deskjet printer driver (poor quality printing),
but have no luck with the correct PSC-750xi printer driver. The fault
is slightly different to before though.

With the USB driver, the printer would report an empty media tray, while
now the localhost:631 interface reports everything OK, but when I try to
print a test page, I get a 'job aborted' error.
