can't print with lpr

I can print a test page from the web browser admin page
but if I try to print from the command line using lpr I get
nothing. The print jobs are in /var/spool/lpd/deskjet
but nothing happens. When I run lpq as root I get the following;

Error: loop in printcap- deskjet at mycomputer.name.net ->
deskjet at mycomputer

When I check the /etc/printcap I see;

# This file was automatically generated by cupsd(8) from the
# /etc/cups/printers.conf file. All changes to this file
# will be lost.
deskjet|deskjet:rm=mycomputer:rp=deskjet:

No obvious loop that I can se here. I don't even think this
is the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't see why printing
in linux requires you to be a printing administration guru.

I have been using linux for 10 years and the printing part has
never gotten any easier. You spend hours and hours reading man
poages and docs and README's and on and on and it always turns
out to be some simple little something somewhere in all the
numerous steps to get printing running that you have missed.

Anyway sorry for the vent. :)

thanks
