[cups.general] Dependency Nightmare

I have been trying to get my Red Hat 9.0 box to
print with an epsonstylus C64 for some time now,
success continues to elude me.
Here's the issue as it stands now:
Robert Morgan has pointed me to the following
site:
  http://xoomer.virgilio.it/wvtberti/linux/stp_driver/gs_stp.htm

from that site I have downloaded the following packages
-------------------------------------------------------
gimp-print-4.2.6-1.i386.rpm (2.3MB)
gimp-print-cups-4.2.6-1.i386.rpm (20MB)
gimp-print-debuginfo-4.2.6-1.i386.rpm (0.8MB)
gimp-print-devel-4.2.6-1.i386.rpm (0.5MB)
gimp-print-plugin-4.2.6-1.i386.rpm (43KB)
gimp-print-utils-4.2.6-1.i386.rpm (18KB)
-------------------------------------------------------
>From the directory to which they have been downloaded, I
have as root issued the following:
[root at linus gimp-print-4.2.6]# rpm -Uvf gimp*
## with the following system response
error: Failed dependencies:
        cups >= 1:1.1.17-10 is needed by gimp-print-cups-4.2.6-1
        gimp-print = 4.2.6 is needed by gimp-print-devel-4.2.6-1
        gimp-print = 4.2.6 is needed by gimp-print-plugin-4.2.6-1
        gimp-print = 4.2.6 is needed by gimp-print-utils-4.2.6-1

I *appear* to have cups 1.1.17 installed, however I then went
to rpmfind.net and dowloaded the following package:
    cups-1.1.17-13.i386.rpm
When I attempt to install this package as follows (as root):
rpm -Uvf gimp-print-4.2.6-1.i386.rpm
## I get the following system response
error: Failed dependencies:
        gimp-print = 4.2.4 is needed by (installed)
        gimp-print-plugin-4.2.4-5

I have two questions:

1)What the &*(^ do I do now?

2)I recognize that there is a commercial component to CUPS
and Mr. Sweet deserves compensation for his admirable efforts.
(and *I* would rather be receiving compensation from my customers
than eating up my time with this so far fruitless effort)

What commercial solutions is there for me to quickly get
my printer working, what is it going to cost, and if I go for
it where do I get it?

If this sounds like a rant, it's a minor one .... I'm still
better off on Linux than on windows.

 thanks
 tim
