LPD print problems with CUPS

Hi all,
I am having a problem printing using CUPS. Using LPRng I could print to printers on Axel netterms / terminal servers using LPD with no problems. Using cups I get an error in the log file of "Remote host did not accept data file" and then i get multiple copies of the print file. I have tried this on other servers that support LPD with exactly the same results.
Has anyone had a similar problem or does anyone know of a cure?
