[cups.general] HP LaserJet 6P - freezing up on label prints and needing machine reboot?

I've had what I consider to be a somewhat bizarre problem with my HP
LaserJet 6P.

It successfully printed, as a single job, 500 copies of a document from
StarOffice. However, the next job involved labels - of the kind safe for
the printer.

The label job seemed to stall every 10 or so sheets and the only way to
make the printer work again was to reboot the entire system.

There was no obvious explanation - all seemed to be working just fine
other than the fact that nothing would actually print. Powercycling the
printer made no difference at all.

This was my first attempt to print a run of labels on this printer.

Does anyone have any idea what might have caused this? Even restarting
CUPS made no difference - it had to be the whole machine.
