Has anyone found a simple way to use authentication on a CUPS server
with a Mac client?

On the server I have:
AuthType Basic
AuthClass User

Here is what I've tried:

ipp://<username>:<password>@a.b.c.d/printers/<printer name>

Works, but there is the problem of a clear text password and does not
work when a machine is shared between users.

Under 10.3 there is a "Windows Printer" feature, which seems to work
with samba, but some print jobs are not completed.  For example only one
page will of a 10 page pdf will make it out of the printer.  Using the
same driver as the IPP printer above.

Under Linux users are prompted for their user/pass when they print, is
there a tool feature to do this under a Mac?

Versions used:
CUPS 1.1.20 w/ HP's PPD
Samba 3.0.2
Mac OS 10.3.3
Printer HP 4200DTN
