Thanks Tim. We've downloaded that and installed it, which fixes the problem of text input being translated to postscript along the way. However, in the event that we have "raw" (preformatted) data (which might be PCL for example, or text containing Prescribe commands for a Kyocera printer), using "lp -o raw" or "lp -o document-format=application/vnd.cups-raw" results in no output whatsoever. We attached a dumb terminal instead of a printer so that we could see whether some malformed output was being sent and ignored by the printer, and this allowed us to prove that raw mode results in the output of exactly zero bytes of data.

Also submitted to RedHat Customer Service as Service Request #372234 (wasn't sure if the problem was RedHat or Cups).
