cups stall

Hi

Environment:

 - 35 users running WinXP (printer drivers installed locally)
 - Samba 3.03 (I think) running on a RedHat 9 kernel version 2.4.20-? linux box with cups printing system installed.
 - 3 Brother 1850 and 1 HP Deskjet 970cxi printers connected with the network with lpd printservers on raw printer queue.

Problem:

 - When many users simontaniously sends printjobs, Samba receives the jobs and sends them to the cups part of the server. After this cups thinks for a long time between each job. One time after the users had sent approx. 25 jobs (only text) off to the server, the last document was served to the printer after 1½ hours - I don't (and my users doesn't eather) call that an acceptable response time...
