cups errors when logrotate runs

we have 2 client machines running rh9 and cups 1.1.17-13.3.0.3

both machines exhibit a strange loss of printing on a monday morning.

we have tracked this down to a series of stops and starts of the service around logrotate. normally we see the cups service stopping and starting, but on the monday, it does not get restarted.

one entry log shows the folowing line

rs_close bad serial port count

another log shows

child exited with status 98!

any ideas what these mean, and if they are related to the non appearance of the demon after a log rotate?
