We already do it, see for example

At the moment we convert to PostScript level 2 or 1 via "pswrite".
You suggest to convert to PDF via "pdfwrite".
If I understand you correctly then by using PDF all the options
of CUPS's pstops should work.
I will test it.

Isn't the additional PDF->PostScript processing in CUPS via pdftops
much slower than starting directly with PostScript?
