From one day to the next the printer (epson stylus color 740)stopped responding to all printing jobs except those directly from gimp. When I tried to correct the problem from localhost:631 I could not get to the admin page -- the system timed out. Eventually I installed the most recent version of cups (1.1.21) from slackware current. That allowed me to install and modify printers, but not configure an existing printer. A typical error message an unsuccessful job (from debug2 level) is:

I want to reply to my own message in case it helps someone else. I reinstalled cups and the package that contains ghostscript and the problem went away. Don't ask me why.
