Well, if you configure the PDF generation by Ghostscript as not to
recompute
images and to keep colors untouched, it is quite fast (faster than the
pswrite
device, as no rendering is necessary), and the pdftops filter supplied
with CUPS 
appears to be quite fast.
If needed, you may use the pdftops wrapper script I posted to the CUPS
link area
recently which permits to specially configure the pdftops utility to
your needs
(e.g. to spit out level 1 PostScript).
