Parallel Port Busy...

After some trouble getting Mandrake 10.1 to see my parallel port, It is finally listed as /dev/lp0 and seems to be correctly configured. Parport, lp and parport_pc are loaded in modprobe.conf and configured with

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
options parport_pc io=0x378 irq=7

which corresponds to my BIOS config.

however  /usr/lib/cups/backend/parallel  gives a reference to dev/unknown...:

direct parallel:/dev/unknown-parallel0 "HEWLETT-PACKARD DESKJET 710C" "Parallel Port #1"

and  cat /proc/sys/dev/parport/parport0/autoprobe gives:

CLASS:PRINTER;
MODEL:DESKJET 710C;
MANUFACTURER:HEWLETT-PACKARD;
DESCRIPTION:Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 710 Series;
COMMAND SET:SCP,VLINK;
[root at localhost jazzman]#

However, Jobviewer always says "processing...", and CUPS config always says the printer is on dev/lp0 and says "Parallel port busy, trying again in 30 seconds..."

Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong here?

Thanks in advance,
Neil
