Ptal startup

I installed my HP G55 this past week. I notice on startup I get a message
Ptal Device not found after the cupsd startup. According to the
documentation Ptal should start before cups. In looking at the rc files I
see the start for Ptal-init as S01 and Cups (no cupsd shown) as S13 for run
level 3 and 5. When I use the advanced mode of the run level editor in YAST
I see cups in levels 2,3,and 5. But ptal-init only says running. Do I need
to add them thru the runlevel editor also. Or did I miss a step in the
install process. The only error I say in the setup was with the SMTP path.
I do not use the printer as a network printer. 

The printer prints OK, my scanner is dead. 
This is SuSE9.1 PRO.
