Never mind. A combination of things made me think that
JetDirect/AppSocket had been disabeled in cups, but it was a
misconfigured RedHat 9.0 and MEPIS/Debian seems to have
JetDirect/AppSocket disabeled brought my inner ChickenLittle to the
fore.
