Do I need Ghostscript?

I am trying to get CUPS 1.1.21 operational on SGi IRiX 6.5 by compiling from source. It has come together okay (compiled and tests work), but i am having difficulty with the final configuration. I have set up a raw printer as well as one with the appropriate PPD for a Laserjet 4. I can send files to the raw printer, but if I send them to the "correct" device, nothing comes out. Running the full debug option on the server, it is clear that it is not matching the MIME type, and sends out the message "Hint; Do you have ESP Ghostscript installed?"

Do I really need GS? I understood it was only necessary if writing to NON-postscript printers. Is there a configuration step I may have overlooked?

If anyone can shed light I would be grateful.
