Brother HL5040 Test page printing aborted

Hi,

I have been trying to set up a Brother HL5040 using cups 1.1.20 under Debian Sarge (cupsys-1.1.20final+rc) and also with self compiled cups-1.1.20. I tried both kernel versions 2.4.26 and 2.6.7 (self compiled). I tried both a usb- and a parallel connection. In both cases the system reports the Brother printer.
However, after installing the printer and hitting the "Print test page" button on the web portal, the printer does not even blink and the job status is reported as "aborted". However, the log-file (debug level debug2) does not contain any clue to me (no "aborted" or "error" keyword.
The same printer works fine using SuSE 9.0.
Any idea what could be wrong, please?
