Printer Status Info over parallel port

Hi.

I have a HP LaserJet 1320 attached to a Linux server that serves the printer to my LAN of Windows and Linux clients using CUPS and IPP (no Samba). I do not seem to get status information from the printer, i.e. when it is out of paper. This doesn't show up on the client computers (I don't know if it's supposed to), but it also doesn't show up on the server's CUPS administration webpage. For example, if I open the cartridge door on the printer, the amber error light begins blinking, but CUPS still says "idle, ready to print". Is there any way to get status information from the printer to CUPS, and maybe the clients? This printer has a USB jack too, should I be using that?
