ahh ... there exists a test program! Thx!

ebri:/usr/share/cups/model/Brother # cupstestppd MFC-9160-PCL5e.ppd.gz
MFC-9160-PCL5e.ppd.gz: FAIL
**FAIL** Unable to open PPD file - Missing PPD-Adobe-4.x header
on line 1.
                 REF: Page 42, section 5.2.

ebri:/usr/share/cups/model/Brother # gunzip MFC-9160-PCL5e.ppd.gz
ebri:/usr/share/cups/model/Brother # cupstestppd MFC-9160-PCL5e.ppd
MFC-9160-PCL5e.ppd: FAIL
**FAIL** Unable to open PPD file - Missing PPD-Adobe-4.x header
on line 1.
                 REF: Page 42, section 5.2.

it seems to be a fault one, perhaps a pure WinNT ppd file.

okay, I try to find the right on.

BTW: it's strange .. Brother tries to support Linux, see
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/printer/linux/cups_drivers.html
but the easiest printers to support - the PCL-Printer e.g. MFC 9160 - is
  *NOT* mentioned!

thx
