StopJob: printer state is 3

My brand new FC3 system doesn't print. The print manager says it's printing, and eventually shows the print job as "completed", but the printer never wakes up, and no data is sent.

The kernel (2.6.9-1.667) maps out /dev/lp0:

kernel: lp0: using parport0 (polling).
kernel: lp0: console ready

(Sorry, the system has been up for awhile, so the logs showing the actual mapping to IRQ7 are gone. :( )

CUPS (1.1.22-0.rc1.8.5) says the printer is there and configured.

lpstat -t
scheduler is running

printer hp842c is idle.  enabled since Jan 01 00:00

(but the date enabled is rather wierd)

And here are the last 20 lines or so from the debug log of a recent print job. I note that the job aborts and CUPS says "printer state is 3", but I don't know what that means.

Note that I have tried printing through DVIPS, Emacs, Evolution, Open Office, and from the command line, and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I have also tried different PPD files: The prefered PPD, hpijs, and the Gimp PPD, etc, and that makes no difference either.
