If you know them, how would you change them in the printing system?

As far as I know margin settings in CUPS affect only plain text input
but neither PostScript input nor graphics images input, see
http://www.cups.org/doc-1.1/sum.html#STANDARD_OPTIONS

And in PPDs there is normally no margin setting.

I have the same problem for our test page for YaST.
Therefore I made the YaST printer testpage only based upon
the imageable area.

As far as I know at least on PostScript printers the bottom left
corner of the paper must have the PostScript coordinates (0,0) (*).

Therefore it would be possible to deterime the distance to the left
and bottom edges of the paper at least on a PostScript printer.

This seems to be the reason why some test pages show rulers only
for the left and bottom edges of the paper.

But as I don't know whether (*) is actually true for the various
printer models (in particular for non-PostScript printers),
I think wrong rulers are worse for the user than no rulers at all.

Kind Regards
