Linux verses Mac OS X uri's

I'm trying to get the hpijs/hplip to work on the Mac and I'm finding the Apple "printer setup utility" and/or adding a print queue via the CUPS webpage won't take a uri in the form of: "hp:/net/deskjet_6127?ip=192.168.1.103" which is the form that's used on the linux side. Is there something that the "/usr/libexec/cups/backend/hp" backend needs to do to register it's self with CUPS on the Mac or it it something else that I'm missing.
