which filter for my driver?

seeing as how much trouble I'm
having with pstoraster, I wonder
what other people will do when
they try to use my driver on their
own system.

In the documentation it states that
a cups-raster filter is the quickest
way to get one's printer working.

I can see how that works fine for graphics
files, but how do I route a text file into
this pipeline?

Is there another filter?  If so how would
I specify that and how to route it into
cups-raster?
