[cups.general] Problems with cups on Debian sarge

I have a Debian sarge system with cupsys 1.1.23-1 and gs-gpl 8.15-2
installed. When attempting to print to a Windows SMB-shared printer
(an HP Laserjet 4L, incidentally), I get the following error in
/var/log/cups/error_log, and the print job is summarily cancelled:

Unable to convert file to printable format for job 1!
Hint: Do you have EPS Ghostscript installed?

Use of smbclient to dump files on the printer share is successful.
Increasing LogLevel to debug gives no additional information.
