network printer control AND status info

Hello forum,

(1)
we got a small PowerPC-Network running linux 2.4 and cups 1.1.20 on every device. We are able to print from one device on the printer at the remote device. Now we want to cancel a job in the queue on a remote device (on the local device everything is ok).
It seems that we have no chance to do that.

How can I get status information like "paper empty" over the network to the initial device (that device which started the job)?
